Preparing to be a better doctor with English: Camilo's story

Camilo,  a 26 year old from Colombia, tells us about his time learning Intensive English in Australia and his time in Adelaide.

Why did you choose to study with Kaplan International?

A lot of my friends told me about Kaplan, they always said to me that it is a great school, you meet great people and can improve your English skills to a high level.

What course are you taking?

I chose intensive English course for 20 weeks and am thinking I would also like to try the IELTS class too.

Why did you choose Intensive English?

I chose this course to improve my English skills faster than other courses. Right now, I’m very glad with it because I can see how much I’ve been improving my level.

I am a doctor so many of the medical journals and training manuals are written in English so this will help me to specialize once I return to Colombia.

I can understand English much better now so will be more comfortable to do presentations and attend international medical conferences from around the world.

What is the best thing about the teachers?

They are very helpful, patient and kind. They also understand when you are tired or when you don’t understand some topic and will be happy to repeat it for you until you get it.

What did you like most about the school?

The people in Kaplan are so kind and helpful and when you speak to others, they also confirm that Kaplan is a good college and has a good reputation.

What do you recommend doing in Adelaide?

Adelaide is a relaxing, calm city where you can escape the chaos of a big city. It has beautiful beaches like Glenelg, Moana, the zoo, the Fringe Festival and the Japanese garden. There are lot’s of beautiful places in the city to visit.

How would you describe the ‘Kaplan Experience’?

Exciting, friendly, different and full of surprises – a good experience.

How can you tell if your English has improved?

I can now chat with people and feel more confident. I can understand and be understood much more easily. My speaking, pronunciation and my writing has really improved a lot and I can compare with the tasks I did when I first arrived.

What is the best thing about studying with students from around the world?

You learn so much from different cultures and it gives me a wide view of the world. It also gives me an opportunity to learn basic language from around the world. I hope to keep in touch with some of my class mates and keep in touch with them in the future.

How does your language course help you achieve your career and study goals?

By giving me English language tools to help me to become a specialized doctor.
