Life at Kaplan; Local Events
Sydney’s Australian Open of Surfing is another event that is very popular with Kaplan students. With the Kaplan Manly School being located just minutes away from the beach, the school is the perfect location for students who want to hit the beach before or after classes. For Anna, 18 from Switzerland, surfing is great for relaxing and having fun. She started a few days after her arrival in Australia, and loves “being so near to the sea and the city at the same time.” Sacha from Belgium has also enjoyed the opportunity to hit the beach between classes and thinks his English has improved greatly while in Australia. According to Sacha “I began at intermediate level and 3 months later I am in the advanced class. Speaking English outside of the classroom means I’m using English all the time, making it really clear.”
In terms of student involvement, American Independence Day and the Notting Hill Carnival have proved to be great days amongst Kaplan students.
From street parades and fireworks to beach side celebrations and street dancing, both events provide students with a unique opportunity to learn about other cultures, befriend other students and ultimately practice their language skills with locals.
