Life@Kaplan: The Best Host Family in the UK
Earlier this year we asked our UK students to tell us why they loved their host family in the UK. We chose the most convincing and heartfelt entry, which came from Kilian Becker at our Kaplan Oxford school! Here's what he had to say about his host family.
The winning family
My host family is absolutely amazing. On the day I arrived I was pretty nervous because it was my first long time away from home, but they took my fear away on the very first day. I have never seen them in a bad mood. When I come home from school they always ask me how I am and what I have learned today. We always eat together at the table, sometimes we talk for 3 hours after dinner about everything, which is always very interesting.
My host father, Colin, runs his own business and he always jokes and he brings a cup of coffee into my room every morning when I have had my shower.
My host mother, Sharon works in a library and when I ask her, she brings home books for me for free. I had never weighed over 65 kg before I came here but now I weight about 70 kg, which is because Sharon is a wonderful cook. Their son, Jamie also lives with us. He is 23 years old and a funny person. In my first week he invited me for his birthday party.
My flatmate Daniel from Italy has been living here for 4 weeks. I recommended him moving into my homestay. Now he wants to stay longer in Oxford because he loves the host family as well.
I remember having dinner together one day the other kids from the Andersons were also here (Laura, 25 she works in Reading and Ryan, 19 he studies in London). After the dinner, Colin put some music on. In the beginning, Laura and Jamie danced a little bit and after one hour, Colin brought disco lights and a fog machine from the cellar and everybody was dancing until midnight! It was very spontaneous and fun. I will never forget this evening. Sometimes Daniel and I feel better there than in Italy or Austria. I give the family 11 out of 10 stars. I am writing this because they really should win this competition. I hope I can keep in touch with them in the future.
