Are You Ready for Your First Day of School?

Face it, there’s not much time left before classes start again, which means it’s time to prepare for a new academic year. You’ve had enough time to relax, had a good time with friends and family, and even got a break from exam pressure. Now you need to dust off books, set the alarm again, and start your classes with a new and excited energy.

You may ask: What will my new classmates will be like? Will I be able to participate in extracurricular activities? Will this year be more productive than the previous one? How will I achieve my goals? Everyone has doubts before starting the new school year, which is why we have offered some advice. Here are 5 tips to help you get off on the right foot and make the most of your study adventure.

1. Get organized

There are many ways to ensure you’re completely prepared for your first day, such as getting enough sleep the night before, getting all your essentials ready (ID card, notebooks and pens, official documents if you are a foreign student, etc.). It’s also important to be clear about your commute and how long will it take to get there. That way, you’ll show up to your first class on time and completely prepared.

2. Join the school’s social channels before classes start

Many schools and universities have Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook communities in which you can interact with other students or even start a conversation before meeting them in real life. This is a great way to make new friends before you even step foot in your new school.

3. Explore your campus

On your first day at university/school we recommend you look up the location on Google Maps and zoom in to view the area in more detail. This way, you’ll get an idea of the neighborhood, restaurants, and nearby stores. If you have a smartphone, getting lost is not an option!

Once there, make a mental note of where essential things are, like restrooms, the cafeteria, gym, and library. That way, you’ll become comfortable with the facilities quickly.

4. Any doubt? Ask!

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It is proven that one of the easiest way to start a conversation with new classmates is by asking questions about a specific subject.

Here are some common conversation starters to break the ice:

  • Do you know if there's a (place) near here?
  • Are you thinking about enrolling in (xxx) club?
  • Excuse me, where did you get that leaflet?
  • Do you know how can I get to (place)?

5. Get involved in campus activities

Extracurricular activities are a great way to know new people. Spending time with friends who share the same interests allows you to discover new things while your brain in shape at the same time. If you’re studying English abroad, this is also a great place to practice your new English skills with your friends.

Live this new academic year with enthusiasm. Set aside the anxiety about your first day and remember that you’re not the only one who might be anxious about new surroundings, friends, and, in some cases, a new language and country. Everyone is in the same boat!
