With 11 Kaplan accredited schools in the UK, it can be difficult making a choice about which one to study at. But studying abroad is just as much about enjoying your new surroundings as it is about your academic studies. So we have listed some of the must-see attractions you can visit during your stay in the United Kingdom.
Bath – The Roman Baths
If you choose to study English in Bath, you must visit the attraction that gave the city its name. The Roman Baths were founded in 70 AD and were built around the natural hot springs of the area. Take a look around the Roman ruins, have a dip in the pool, and then take a sip of the healing spa water! You won’t find anything else like this in the UK.
Bournemouth – Bournemouth Beach
Bournemouth Beach is without a doubt among the best in the country, with a busy promenade full of restaurants, cafés, and entertainment. Any time spent studying in Bournemouth will be full of stunning sunsets, delicious cuisine, and the added bonus of living in a town where everything is within walking distance. Enjoy a typical British meal of fish and chips while taking in the beautiful views of the city.
Cambridge – Museums
If you visit the academic center of the UK, then you must visit one of the many museums in the city. Depicting a wealth of cultural and historical artifacts to amaze and astound you, the museums also come with another great perk: most of them are free! Wander around the Fitzwilliam Museum, or navigate your way through the Centre of Computing History. Maybe you’d prefer the Sedgwick Museum of Geology or the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Edinburgh – Holyrood Park
Holyrood Park is an SSI (site of special scientific interest) thanks to its volcanic geology and vast ecosystem. Set aside the afternoon, as it takes around two hours to walk to the peak of the extinct volcano, known as Arthur’s Seat, where you will experience breath-taking views of the city. And the best part? It's within walking-distance of our English school in Edinburgh!
Liverpool – Albert Dock
Albert Dock was a working dock from the date it opened in 1846 until 1972. It’s now restored and forms part of UNESCO’s designated World Heritage Site in Liverpool, home to the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings. Spend time walking around the dock now filled with top restaurants, cafés, and a collection of interesting museums, including the Beatles Story, International Slavery Museum, Merseyside Maritime Museum, and Tate Liverpool.
London – Natural History Museum
It’s hard to pick just one when it comes to London, the capital of UK. A must-see is the beautiful Natural History Museum. Aside from the interesting dinosaur exhibition housed inside, the outside of the building is impressive with its Romanesque architecture. You can visit the nearby Exhibition Road, famous for an array of museums and beautiful buildings such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Science Museum, and Royal Albert Hall.
Manchester – Football Stadiums
Football fans will be in their element in Manchester. Enjoy guided tours of the football grounds, or buy tickets for one of the football matches at either Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, or Manchester United’s Old Trafford. The grounds are also often used for music concerts, so it is worth keeping an eye out for the next gig!
Oxford – Creation Theatre Company
If you intend to spend time in Oxford, you must book tickets to see a show by the Creation Theatre Company. The shows take place all over Oxford, with the founders looking for unusual settings to fit the story, using the city as the stage. Talented actors bring old favorites to life, and it’s a fun way to practice your English in Oxford.
Salisbury – Stonehenge
The Stonehenge monument was built around 5000 years ago and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It’s also one of the best-known prehistoric monuments and older than the pyramids! Close to Salisbury, it’s worth the trip – find out what the mystery is all about.
Torquay – Kents Cavern
Visit Kents Cavern, which has archaeological, geological, and ancient importance. Explore the complex system of caverns below the earth and take a step back in time. Discover this iconic attraction, situated a short distance from Torquay.
