Life@Kaplan: KICK Young Learner program in Nottingham
More than 300 of Mexico’s top high school students have become global citizens in Nottingham, thanks to Kaplan. The Knowledge International Challenge by Kaplan (KICK) education initiative has brought secondary high school students from Mexico to Nottingham for two weeks of English language and enrichment programs.
The program took place between 28 March-15 April on the Nottingham University campus, delivered by university lecturers and Kaplan teachers. The city of Nottingham was chosen by KICK because of its cultural and historical significance, and its central location making it a great base from which to explore other important locations in the UK.
Students learnt English through competitive activities including: International Discussion Forum, Word Power Challenge, Rhythms of the World competition, Entrepreneurial Lab, and an acting competition. KICK also offered the students an opportunity to expand their horizons through travel, they visited London, Cambridge, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Warwick Castle.
Mauricio Espinosa, Kaplan International Mexico’s Country Manager adds, “KICK is a unique experience that allows total immersion in British culture, promoting personal and academic talents from each of the participants. While improving their English language skills, students also develop critical thinking, leadership, independence, entrepreneurial skills, decision-making, and of course, a global outlook.”

Q. Have you enjoyed the lessons here at KICK?
A. The Kaplan teachers are great, they are fun and we don’t get bored in class. We do a lot of speaking, also writing; they make us talk about what we like and that’s great to improve our vocabulary.
Q. Has your English improved since being here? How can you tell?
A. My English has improved a lot, now I can speak more fluently and understand what people are saying to me without any help.
Q. What has been your favourite thing about this experience?
A. My favorite thing about this experience has been meeting and socializing with people from different cultures. My favorite activity is shopping because I can go to the town and learn the culture, and the places in Nottingham.
