Kaplan City Guide: Toronto

Located on the northwest shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto is Canada’s largest city and has been ranked as one of the most liveable cities in the world. It's home to almost 3 million people and is a global center for arts, culture, finance, and business. We asked students at Kaplan's English school in Toronto to share with us their favorite things to do in this amazing city, and here is what they said:

A range of amazing activities

“Toronto is a great city with lots of things to do. You can watch the Raptors (basketball), the Maple Leafs (hockey), and the Blue Jays (baseball) play, go to the zoo, or visit Canada’s Wonderland. And if you like shopping, the outlet mall is a great place to go.”

Escape the busy downtown area and enjoy a slice of nature at Toronto Islands. Take the ferry from Queens Quay and enjoy the amazing views of Lake Ontario and the city’s skyline. This is the perfect opportunity to tan at the beach or at the green fields, enjoy a bike ride, or kayak down the river. Among the island’s attraction are the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, Centreville Amusement Park, and Far Enough Farm.

Enjoy a bit of whimsy at Canada’s amusement park

“Toronto is a big, peaceful, and cultural city. A place that everyone should go to is Canada's Wonderland. It is a great amusement park with lots of roller coasters.”

Fellipy Ramos, Brazil

Canada’s Wonderland is the perfect place for those who enjoy a bit of adventure and adrenaline. Gather a few friends and spend a fun afternoon in this premiere amusement park. Among the park’s main attractions is Leviathan, a roller coaster that boasts speeds of 148 km/h with an 80-degree drop. If you like water parks, you can also spend some time at the Splash Works for even more thrill rides.

Discover breath-taking views at CN Tower

“You should visit the CN Tower, as it is a good place to view the city from up high.”

Tip provided by:

Loay Alshareef, Saudi Arabia

Classified as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the CN Tower is one of the most famous and celebrated landmarks of Toronto. For the past 4 decades the 553.33m tower has been defining the city’s skyline, and each year more than 1.5 million people visit it. Besides serving as a telecommunication hub and offering unique views of the city, the tower also provides many attractions, exhibits, and dining venues.

Explore Canada’s Castle or the Distillery District

“The buildings are amazing, in my opinion. Casa Loma is the most beautiful place, but my favorite place is the Distillery District. It used to be a beer factory, but now it is closed and is a tourist attraction.”

Tip provided by:

Maria Alvarez, Mexico

Casa Loma is a beautiful castle and the former home of financier Sir Henry Pellatt. Here, you can take a tour and see the decorated suites, secret passages, towers, gardens, and more. Go back in time for the day and enjoy this medieval paradise. Or if castles aren’t to your liking, you can spend an afternoon in the Distillery District, which has been transformed into a commercial center filled with delicious restaurants and has the largest collection of Victorian-era industrial architecture in North America.
